About The Department
Overview Science Laboratory technology Department is one of the foundation academic department of the Ogun State Institute of Technology (Formerly Gateway Polytechnic) Igbesa, Ogun State. It was established in June 29th 2006.. The department started off with enrolment of 27 students , all in the first year of the then Nigerian National Diploma programmes under the able leadership of Dr. Bankole Isaac Sewanu as the pioneer Head of Department. The department had an academic staff strength of nine (9) and five (4) supporting staff during its first two years of existing. . Our first set of National Diploma students graduated at the end of the 2007/2008 academic session Presently, the Department staff strength has grown to thirty seven(37) Academic staff and ten (5) supporting staff with a substantive academic growth in our programs at Higher National Diploma Level with options in chemistry, Microbiology, Environmental Biology and Physics with electronics TITLE AND LEVEL OF EXISTING PROGRAMME. Mr Balogun S.O 2021-2023 The department among other academic departments in the Polytechnic has the highest record of having its staff appointed staff to serve the institution at high level of academic and administrative responsibility. This is due to the recognition of the crop of dedicated competent and quality staff in the department. Member of staff have served as Director of part time studies, Director of Polyconsult and Industrial Service, Dean of School, Dean of Student Affairs among others. Members of staff of this department have also projected the image of the institution through publication of their research efforts in local and international journals and being members of national and international professional bodies. NATIONAL DIPLOMA [Full-Time] Mode of Study: Full Time | Time-Table: Day | Duration: 4 Semester COURSE OBJECTIVES [Full-Time] The programme's goal is to produce technicians capable of carrying out various laboratory analysis and practical works under the supervision of a technologist. The course is intended to produce technicians who will: Assist in chemical analysis and quality control in: Industry (oil, food, brewing, detergent, textile etc.) Hospitals, schools, colleges and research institutions. Assist in physical and electronic laboratories with physical analyses and the maintenance of instrumentation. Assist in biological and biochemical analysis and experiments in hospitals, schools, colleges and research institutes. The course is expected to prepare students for employment in related work such as sales, marketing, administration and management in industry and also, for self employment. Mode of Study [Full-Time] Full-Time COURSE OBJECTIVES [Part-Time] The programme's goal is to produce technicians capable of carrying out various laboratory analysis and practical works under the supervision of a technologist. The course is intended to produce technicians who will: Assist in chemical analysis and quality control in: Industry (oil, food, brewing, detergent, textile etc.) Hospitals, schools, colleges and research institutions. The programme's goal is to produce technologists capable of carrying out various laboratory analysis and practical works independently. Specifically, the graduates should be able to; Carry out chemical analysis and quality control in: Industry (Oil, Food, brewing, detergent, textile etc.), Hospitals, schools, colleges and research institutes. Carry out general chemical work in industrial and academic laboratories. Assist in biochemical analysis and experiments in hospitals, schools, colleges and research institutes. Prepare students for employment in related work such as sales, marketing, administration and management in industry and also for self employment. The Department offers Higher National Diploma in Science Laboratory Technology (Physics Option) is designed to produce technologist who would be able to Undertakeequipmrnt repair and instrumentation. Calibrate and install equipment. Design circuits for application to electronic systems/ Design and fabricate electronic equipment for industrial and other uses. Automate industrial process. Entry Requirement NATIONAL DIPLOMA (ND) PROGRAMMES WAEC,GCE[O/L],SSCE,NECO,NABTEB or equivalent with Credits pass in English Language, Mathematics, Physics,Chemistry,Biology and any other from Economics, Agric Sc, Technical Drawing, Metal or Wood Work, Basic Electricity, Geography, Further Mathematics. HIGHER NATIONAL DIPLOMA (HND) PROGRAMMES Applicants seeking Higher National Diploma [HND] admission must possess the basic entry requirements for the National Diploma Programme. In addition, the applicant must possess the ND in Science Laboratory Technology obtained at not less than the Lower Credit level from Ogun State Institute of Technology Igbesa or from any other Polytechnic accredited for the programme, or its recognised equivalent plus a minimum of one [1] year post qualification relevant industrial work experience.
